Town Revitalization Project: Firefly Village

The dance of the fireflies is a testimony to the wellbeing of the natural environment. The fireflies, which are a special feature of the beautiful natural environment in Kitagawa, are being developed into a symbol of the town's revitalization through the Firefly Naissance (birth) Maintenance Project. The project aims to promote the nostalgic enchantment of an old village surrounded by forests, with flowing rivers and dancing fireflies; where encounters between people and nature are abundant; a place where people can live in security. This is one facet of Kitagawa's regional development.

Septic Tank Installation Project

The Septic Tank Installment Project began in 1989 in an endeavor to preserve the water quality of the public water areas and for the creation of a pleasant and sanitary living environment. To date, 1100 septic tanks have been installed. By the end of the 2005 fiscal year, the proportion of toilets with flushing facilities reached approximately 70%. From now on it is necessary to continue installing septic tanks for the remaining households and carry out the appropriate maintenance.

River Beautification Initiatives

Since its establishment in 1982, the Executive Committee for the Beautification of the Kitagawa River has been proactive in making efforts towards river water purification and cleaning, as well as maintaining the surrounding environment in order to protect the clear streams of the Kitagawa River. Every year, the first Sunday in July has been designated as the official "River Cleaning Day" in Kitagawa. Residents of all ages from all 17 districts within the area take part in helping out. We must continue these activities so that the Kitagawa River, which provides our daily lives with such great blessings and tranquility, will remain for generations to come.
