Climbing Monkey Figurines (Nobori Zaru)

Climbing Monkey Figurines (Nobori Zaru)

The Climbing Monkey is a traditional local toy from the Nobeoka area. Climbing Monkey toys were displayed along with carp streamers (brightly coloured streamers shaped like carp fish which are traditionally displayed from late April to early May to celebrate the Children's Festival held on May 5), and also during other seasonal festivals in May to pray for continuing fortune in battle and abundant crops in the period when the Naito Clan ruled Nobeoka.

As the banner on the toy fills with wind and expands, the paper monkey nimbly climbs up the bamboo pole. The Climbing Monkey is also considered as a good luck charm.
