Nobeoka's (tanka) poet, "Bokusui Wakayama", spent 8 years of his childhood at upper elementary and middle schools in Nobeoka from 1896 (Meiji 29). During this time, it is said he developed his foundation as a tanka poet.

Every March, the "Bokusui Wakayama Tanka Monument Festival" honouring Bokusui is held.

The residence that Bokusui lived in during his Nobeoka Middle School years (according to the old schooling system) has been kept in its original condition over the years. It is currently being used as private housing.

Kyushu University of Health and Welfare features a "Youth Promenade" trail on its campus. Seventeen monuments in memory of Bokusui Wakayama inscribed with his poems can be found along this walk.
